The study aims to contribute material to inform policies to reduce older people’s homelessness. The set of projects presented in this report are explicitly intended to provide a foundation for policies around homelessness for older Australians.

Facing the future — A baseline profile on older Tasmanians
Th is major piece of research has been conducted by a team of people over 2012 and 2013 to provide greater insight into older Tasmanians. COTA Tasmania (Council on the Ageing) is the leading voice for older Tasmanians and as such it is timely and significant that as an organisation it can be involved in such an important piece of work.

Prevalence of Homeless Older Adults and Factors Causing Their Homelessness: A Review
Objectives: To examine the prevalence of homeless older adults and causes of homelessness among the elderly.
Methods: Systematic review involving search of Medline, Cochrane Review and GoogleScholar, including homeless, homelessness, elder, elderly, aged and in old age. For prevalence, articles before 2000 were excluded, and samples had to be at least 50 ±5 years of age.

Senior cohousing communities - an alternative approach for the UK?
Cohousing is a way of living both ‘apart and together’ with a collaborative group of neighbours who know each other and sign up to certain values. They work to develop the social capital that creates and maintains a sense of community.
Senior cohousing needs policy makers to recognise the benefits for older people of living in this way and to work to remove the obstacles that impede them.

Key issues for older Tasmanians
Tasmania currently has the highest proportion of older people in our state compared to all other jurisdictions in Australia. At present nearly one fifth of the Tasmanian population is aged 60 years and over.

Sheltering Homeless Seniors Literature Review
The papers that make up the literature review are a combination of published research, grey literature, and government documents. Qualitative and quantitative research papers were included. Service provider input was a mixture of both perspectives. The readings arc across a broad range of learning around homeless seniors and their challenges.

Best practices in self-administration of communal senior housing
The aim of this report is to present information about forms of housing relevant to older people with various degrees of care needs. Best practice in Italy, Poland, the UK and Sweden is examined.
The various best practice examples presented are evidence of empowerment, autonomy and mutual support.

Age friendly societies in our time? A literature review
This project sought to gain an understanding of the state and breadth of knowledge about the social isolation of older people in urban areas, with particular attention paid to housing form, and formal and informal care. The coverage is of international material in English; with items emanating from or relating to Canada generally, being of particular interest.

Housing an Ageing Population: Implications for Managing the Social Housing Stock
The UK is currently experiencing an exponential rise in the 50 + population. Increased life expectancy coupled with the retirement of the “post war baby boomers” presents a demographic spike which has significant implications for society.
