This presentation looks at trends in homelessness for the Australian population aged 55 years and over, using Census data from 2006, 2011 and 2016. Areas detailed include: - Specialist Homelessness Services - Households in housing stress - Increase in homelessness for the population aged 55 years+ - Proportion of home owners with a mortgage and those living in private rental market. If home ownership continues to decline for population aged 65+ and there is no growth in social housing rental share (i.e. the case where all non-homeowners will be reliant on the private rental market) then possible demand for affordable private rental housing in 40 years will be 1 million households; about 20% of all older households.
