The NSW Ageing on the Edge Pre-Budget Submission provides proposals to address the housing crisis for older people in NSW who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. We call on the NSW government to: fund a specialist older persons’ housing information and support service that comprises both an early intervention and crisis response; lower the priority age for social housing eligibility from 80 years as a matter of urgency; and build 5,000 social homes per year for 10 years, 20% of which should be dedicated to older people.

Sue is 74 years old and became homeless when her daughter asked her to leave her property in NSW. She moved to Victoria to stay with a friend, who helped her to connect with the local crisis homelessness service, Beyond Housing. She was referred into our program by Beyond Housing Seymour.

Rodney, an 85 year old man, was living in a bungalow at the back of a house in the western suburbs of Melbourne. He has lived independently his whole life, never married and has no children.

Joseph lives in a small retirement village in a regional area. Although some residents have paid ingoings up to $85,000, the village largely caters to people on pensions with little or no savings. Many, including Joseph, didn’t pay any upfront fee and simply rent their units month to month.

The Heat is on high rises!

27 Nov 2024
Shane and Fiona talk to Bill McKenzie, public housing resident and HAAG member, talking about his citizen science work at Layfield Court, one of the older persons high rises in Melbourne, and about the issues of heatwaves in high rises, Homes Victoria's communications about the demolitions, and the roll out of the air conditioning program.Corrections: The undercounting of heatwave deaths was between 2006-2017, not 2006-2009. More information can be found via the ANU Climate Energy and Disaster Solutions. The airconditioners supplied by Vic Govt were 2.9KvA not 3.9KVA
