As part of our campaign in the Homelessness Week 2016, HAAG members and staffs took to the streets of Melbourne to highlight the issue of hidden homelessness. Older women are the fastest growing group of homeless people; we are seeing a huge surge in the numbers of women accessing our service due to issues around poverty and housing affordability, and for this reason we call on the government to build more public housing. Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and wet of a wintery Melbourne day to support our cause.
This submission is a response by Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) to the ‘Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants’ issues paper forming a part of the review of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA).
HAAG would like to acknowledge that the submission was compiled with contribution from our members and that this forms the foundation of our response.
"Governments and the private sector must work together to provide affordable and social housing, because, just like roads and rail, accommodation for all is critical infrastructure for the economy."
The Consumer Action Law Centre (Consumer Action), Council on the Ageing Victoria (COTA), Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG), Justice Connect (Seniors Law) (Justice Connect) and Residents of Retirement Villages Victoria (RRVV), welcome the opportunity tocontribute to the parliamentary inquiry into the retirement housing sector.
HAAG hosted the launch of our new report on the 26th July at the Multicultural Hub on Elizabeth St in the city. We had a good attendance of about 40 people.
