At every age we all should be able to live in affordable, stable and securing housing. Yet older women are one of the fastest growing population group experiencing insecure housing and homelessness.

As part of International Women’s Day, Dr Kathleen Brasher, Executive Officer Upper Hume Primary Care Partnership, will host a conversation that explores the drivers of insecure housing for older women and how we can ensure that women remain in stable, appropriate housing as they age.

With over 400,000 women over the age of 45 at risk of homelessness, the provision of affordable, long-term housing for women is vital to prevent even more older women from falling into homelessness. On the other hand, younger women are finding it more difficult to secure a foothold in the Australian dream of owning a home.

This situation has to change, and with the upcoming federal election, now is the time to understand the connection between housing and gender equality; and why without affordable, long-term housing, women will continue to lag behind.

This event will bring together a round table discussion with key figures who are working to address the issue of homelessness across many fields in Australia. The aim is to pinpoint practical strategies and alliances that will move forward to solutions grounded in lived experience.
