Ageing on the Edge: Older Persons Homelessness Prevention Project is participating in a session at the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institue National Homelessness Conference to be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Ageing on the Edge is seeking to form a national network of older people who are interested in being involved in taking action to get more help and housing for older people who don’t have a secure and affordable home in retirement.

Join the Network

The Ageing on the Edge NSW Forum has developed from the Ageing on the Edge Older Persons Homelessness Prevention Project Reference Group. The Forum was convened in May 2018 to seek implementation of the key recommendations in the report, determine other key housing issues that need to be addressed for older people in NSW and work collaboratively towards achieving the Forum’s aims.

The Ageing on the Edge - Older Persons Homelessness Prevention Project is extending HAAG’s work across Australia. In response to rapidly increasing housing problems facing older people, the project aims to raise awareness and improve services and housing for older people at risk of homelessness. The project made it into the National Housing Conference edition of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) journal Housing Works. Read the full article here

HAAG has made a submission to the Inquiry into the Treasury Laws Amendment  to the The National Housing and Homelessness Agreement Bill. The bill presents the Australian government with an opportunity to develop a national housing policy that addresses increasing need for secure affordable housing.

This submission focuses on the need for the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement Bill to acknowledge the dire circumstances facing an increasing ageing population that is facing a future of housing hardship due to successive government policies that have focused on private rental subsidies in Commonwealth Rent Assistance rather than much needed capital expenditure on public and community housing. This has created a long-term need for investment in public and community housing but also urgently put in place specialist early intervention homelessness support services to assist the thousands of older people experiencing hardship and at risk of homelessness in the private rental market.
