Shane and Fiona revisit the highlights of the year, starting with the East Gippsland bushfires, the start of the pandemic, the hard lock down of public housing towers and finishing with reminiscing about the housing activism of the 1980s with Jeff Fiedler.
Public vs Community housing - Tenants compare experiences
25 Nov 2020
Shane and Fiona speak to Claire Hurren about her report that compares the experiences of tenants living in public and community housing. What difference does having a Community Housing Provider as a landlord make? How do tenants understand and exercise their rights? You can read the full report here: https://www.oldertenants.org.au/publications/public-and-community-housing-comparing-the-rights-and-experiences-older-tenants The release of this research coincided with a big State Government announcement of building new social housing - most of which is community, not public, housing - and we discuss the implications of government policy to move away from public housing.
HAAG released a report today comparing the experiences of tenants who live in public housing with those who live in community housing, finding that there are significant differences for tenants in exercising their rights. The report compares the regulatory frameworks of housing owned and managed by the State Government, with housing managed by not-for-profit community housing providers.
This report compares tenants rights and legislative and policy frameworks for public housing and community housing, with a focus on how these are experienced by older tenants. By foregrounding the perspectives of older tenants, this report hopes to provide insight into the personal impact of the systems that shape tenant’s housing experiences. This report also includes the experiences of housing support workers, to provide additional insight into the processes by which tenants access public and community housing.
Our Annual Report looks at our achievements over the 2019-20 financial year, our campaigns, actions and events, the growth of our services, and the many projects under the HAAG umbrella.
This booklet compiles stories from older people experiencing homelessness and housing stress from around Australia, who form the the National Alliance of Seniors for Housing, advocating for safe and affordable housing for older people.
