HAAG welcomes the opportunity to provide input into the Inquiry into the Rental and Housing Affordability Crisis in Victoria. This submission is based on our experience delivering housing and related support services to older people, research and lived experiences of older people experiencing housing stress or homelessness in Australia. We especially acknowledge the contributions to this submission made by members of HAAG’s advisory groups including Retirement Accommodation Action Group (RAAG), LGBTQIA+ reference group and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) reference group.

As part of Homelessness Week, you are invited to attend a a screening of the documentary 'Undercover' to watch the complex and compelling stories of 10 diverse Australian women who are seeking to find a home to call their own.

Jack and his dog Carlos had been living in his van for several years. He had no long-term housing since a family breakdown and had been moving regularly between different states in Australia. His daughter told him about the Home At Last service, so he called to find out if we could assist him.

On Friday 7th of July, Stephanie Agius, Rebecca Cook, Fiona Waters visited the Lorraine Bedella Seniors Centre in Altona North to deliver information about accessing affordable housing and aged care navigation through the Care Finder program. Vanessa Heart, Peer Educator attends the Macedonian social group weekly and translated the session. 24 people attended the session. 3 were signed up as Care Finder clients and 13 people signed on as HAAG members.

New original research conducted by Housing for the Aged Action Group by researchers at Swinburne University of Technology, Western Sydney University and Curtin University examining the housing circumstances of people aged 55 years and older, based on 2021 and 2011 Census analysis. The research launch will include both an analysis of the findings and the voices of people with a lived experience of homelessness, in a panel discussion introduced by Senator David Pocock.

Joint Statement by Tenants’ Union of NSW, Shelter NSW, and the NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) along with Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG).

The housing crisis is disproportionately impacting on some of the most disadvantaged people in our society. Despite the media’s attempt to pit the generations against each other with “boomer vs millennial” tropes, home ownership in this country is largely determined by intergenerational wealth transfer, rather than age.
