HAAG supports the YES vote in the Voice to Parliament Referendum

Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG), a community-based organisation specialising in the housing needs of older people, supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart, an invitation to walk with First Nations in a movement for a better future for everyone in Australia.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart called for a First Nations Voice in the Australian Constitution, and a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise a process of treaty-making and truth telling. HAAG supports Australia’s First Nations peoples in seeking these outcomes, the call for Truth, Treaty, and Voice.

HAAG supports the YES vote in the Voice to Parliament Referendum. The Referendum gives us the opportunity to formally acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia through an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice being enshrined in the Constitution.

As a specialist older persons housing organisation, we acknowledge the importance of Elders in the community, and are hopeful that the Voice of our Elders, both those who have passed on and those in the community, will have an opportunity to be heard.

We acknowledge there is a diversity of views among the community about the Voice proposal. We encourage everyone to form their own view, and to have respect for different views to their own and vote accordingly.
