King St Older Person's Highrise consultation

22 Apr 2026

Our advocacy team visited King Street, Prahran to hear from residents in the older person's high rises there. Victorian Public Tenant's Association organised a morning tea, and Better Health Network were also there. Around ten residents came along.

People want to stay in 55+ housing. If they are in a family building they want a private social area for people aged 55+ and dedicated 55+ floors. They have heard from friends that the new buildings dont have phone reception inside, due to the materials they build with, which is a problem if they need to dial 000. People are concerned about increased prices and embedded networks, and how hard it is for people to get concessions. Residents are unclear about how much rent they will be paying if they move - will it be 25% or 30% of income? They also mentioned the need for enough parking, including for carers, and doors that stay open so they can bring in shopping.

People said that crime had recently increased in the area, which made them feel unsafe. Residents want peepholes in their front doors.

At the time there was repainting and upgrades to stairs, which people found confusing if the building is being demolished.
