Goulburn Valley - Hume Regional Program

A housing information service for older people has come to the Goulburn Valley - Hume region, providing information and advice on housing options and practical support for older people at risk of homelessness. Housing for the Aged Action Group is a community organisation that runs the Home at Last service, and has expanded to the region in 2022, thanks to the generosity of the Ian Rollo Currie Foundation. It is now an ongoing program.

Latest Updates and Events from the Goulburn Valley - Hume Program

In 2021, Housing for the Aged Action Group extended its housing information service for older people to the Goulburn Valley region of Central Victoria, providing information and advice on housing options and practical support for older people at risk of homelessness. Despite floods, COVID-19, heatwaves and fires, a small team of local women have assisted over 91 older people at risk of homelessness to find housing. This video tells their story.

We provided evidence to the Inquiry that,  increasing numbers of older people in regional Victoria do not own their own homes and they find themselves facing the real and frightening prospect of homelessness in older age. Older people in regional Victoria are facing a significant and growing housing crisis that has serious impacts on their health and
wellbeing, and this limits their ability to access aged care supports – it is very difficult to be able to access in-home care if you do not have a stable house. We desperately need more homes for low-income older Victorians and the best way to do that is by investing in public and community housing and low-cost retirement housing.

Stories from the Valley

Sue is 74 years old and became homeless when her daughter asked her to leave her property in NSW. She moved to Victoria to stay with a friend, who helped her to connect with the local crisis homelessness service, Beyond Housing. She was referred into our program by Beyond Housing Seymour.

In January this year we received a referral from Beyond Housing in Seymour. Glen had moved back to Victoria to live with family after been a victim of a home invasion and serious assault in public housing in NSW. Glen was living in a caravan on a family member’s property at Seymour but he had been asked him to leave, and he was going to start camping by the river.

David was camping with his dog Timmy on the Murray River near Cobram. He had been on the priority housing waiting list for 5 years. David said he had contacted a crisis housing access point several times but he was told there was no housing.

He’d heard about a Housing Information session organized by HAAG at the Cobram Community Centre in February, and decided to come along!
