Funding News
HAAG is the recipient of generous funding from many philanthropic organisations as detailed below.
November 2011
The Victoria Law Foundation Grant Housing for the Aged Action Group has been successful in obtaining a General Grant from The Victoria Law Foundation for the project Caravan and residential parks residents committee project.
This project aims to empower older people, who are disproportionately represented among caravan parks residents, by providing them with practical information about the law. In particular, it aims to educate residents across Victoria of their right to establish a residents’ committee, which was recently been legislated through the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (Vic).
The Victoria Law Foundation awards grants to organisations for projects and programs in relation to the law that benefit the people of Victoria.
HAAG is delighted to be recognised for this project.

Melbourne musicians breathed life into the incredible songs of Townes Van Zandt.
Artist Les Thomas nominated Housing for the Aged Action Group to receive proceeds from A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt held on Saturday 12 November at the Empress Hotel, Fitzroy North "after researching organisations that are doing great work in address housing and homelessness issues".
The night featured solo artists and a full band.

Les Thomas was delighted to present HAAG with a cheque made out to the value of $500.00. He is pictured here presenting the cheque to Ena and Nini of HAAG.
Our thanks are extended to Les and fellow artists.

We thank United Way Australia for their continued support.
At the end of 2009 United Way Melbourne allocated a grant of $6,000 for relocation costs of clients under the Assistance with Care and Housing for the Aged (ACHA) program.

The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation has provided us with a grant for the Older Persons Relocation Project. The grant will enable us to assist with re-locating older, frail people to more affordable and secure housing.
We are very grateful to the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation for providing their ongoing support of our services and for recognising the positive impact of our outreach services.
2009
The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation provided us with a grant for the Older Persons Relocation Project.
We also received an additional grant of $3,000 from the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation during their “85 Days of Giving” program. HAAG was nominated by a number of our members, clients and other community workers who consider our work for the community to be of great merit. The money will be used to assist our ACHA clients to keep their current housing or move to new accommodation. Thanks to all those who nominated us
Myer Foundation Commemorative Grant
In 2009 we were provided a Commemorative Grant to celebrate 75 years of the Sidney Myer Fund and 50 years of The Myer Foundation. Grants were distributed to 37 Australian non-profit organisations in recognition of their work.
The Celebrating Our Partners project commenced in December 2009 with the aim of building HAAG’s long-term viability. The project emphasis was on obtaining funding for our ‘Housing Options Service’ and growing our membership through the promotion of both HAAG’s services and meeting with older people about their housing issues and what they see as possible solutions. The project ended in April 2011 and during the course of the project we completed the ‘Housing Options Service’ submission and have presented this to a number of federal government departments and the Victorian Minister for Housing, Wendy Lovell for funding consideration as part of the Governments 2020 Homelessness Strategy.
The project has provided us with the opportunity to review the housing information we provide to the broader Victorian community and in April we established HAAG’s Housing Information Centre within our office (see photo on page 7). The Centre is open for drop in during business hours and provides free written material covering topics such as finding and applying for suitable accommodation, retirement housing options and tenancy rights information. As part of our information review we have now made all of this information available electronically on HAAG’s web page.
Membership recruitment has occurred through community education sessions, held in metropolitan and country Victoria and through two significant HAAG forums, the Victorian Parliament Inquiry into Public Housing and HAAG’s Social & Public Housing forum targeted at public housing tenants and applicants. Recruitment also happened through participation in a number of community events or one-off information/training sessions to special interest groups.
These included: The Aboriginal & Family Violence Prevention Legal Service Victoria at their Sisters Day Out Workshop, Maroondah City Council’s Seniors Expo held at Eastland Shopping Centre, African Women’s Support Group, Citizens Information Service Southern Region, Italian Older Persons’ Group and a number of Aged Care Service workers networks in the Eastern and Southern regions of Melbourne.
One of the really positive outcomes from our membership recruitment is that we now have a group of people wanting to volunteer with us on an ongoing basis and who are really keen to conduct community education activities and staff our Housing Information Centre.
The project also had a broader research role and we participated in the Foundations research program on the wider issue of capacity building of the not for profit sector. The research was conducted by the Queensland University of Technology’s Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Non-profit Studies. The research is now complete and its findings are very important to the nonprofit sector and the broader Australian grant maker network. Anyone interested in the final report please contact April at the HAAG office.
We once again thank the Myer Foundation for the wonderful opportunity they provided us.
The HAAG Project is to provide a better service to our members, as well as provide more information to the broader Victorian community about older persons housing issues and to provide more assistance to older people in need. This will include more regular newsletters, suburban and country forums, general meetings, getting out to health and aged care services that assist older people so that we can provide them with housing information and also improve our Housing Options Service.
Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation
Our thanks and appreciation to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust for their grants of $10,000 each to assist with our client work and community education.
HAAG receives funding from Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing to provide these services to older people in the Victorian Community.
Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing
One of our vital services is our outreach support service for frail older people who are in housing difficulty. Called the Assistance with Care and Housing for the Aged (ACHA) Service, this funding allows us to help older people who are being evicted from private rental housing to be able to access affordabel housing. while we have been providing this service for nearly 15 years, the funding has remained static over that period. From July 1 2009 our funding for this program has been increased by 25% and has enabled us to employ another ACHA worker.
Consumer Affairs Victoria
Consumer Affairs Victoria has provided funding to HAAG for a new position that will focus on the needs of older poeple living in retirement housing with a focus on the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged residents if retirement villages. This program commenced as a 12 month pilot and is now an ongoing project for two years from July 2010. We aim to improve resident's knowledge of their rights and support them to take action when required.
