I am writing to you requesting your endorsement of the attached Housing Justice for the Aged MANIFESTO. The MANIFESTO was produced by Housing for the Aged Action Group, in response to the radical change to Federal and State Government housing policy over the past decade. Budget constraints put on public housing by the Federal Government has meant that housing policy in Australia has moved away from direct government provision of housing, towards an emphasis on private/public partnerships and the promotion of community/private enterprises. Often these enterprises have left older low income tenants in extremely vulnerable situations such as having to pay over 30% of their income in rent, no security of tenure and without being able to obtain a well maintained home. Whilst it is your responsibility to look at supply of housing, no one ever asks "What do older tenants need"? The Housing Justice for the Aged MANIFESTO is the voice of older people who have answered this question. I believe that Government has a responsibility to ensure all of the attached benchmarks become a national housing standard and urge you to endorse the MANIFESTO when forming Government housing policy.
